Wound Care

If you notice redness, swelling, or have a wound that is not closing with fluid starting to build up, these are signs your body may need extra support to heal. That is where wound care steps in, precisely, purposefully, and without delay.

At Surgical Focus, every wound care treatment begins with a thorough assessment. Wound care is approached with both medical insight and surgical awareness, allowing Dr Lakshmanan, a surgical GP in Lonehill, to evaluate not only the wound itself but also the factors that may be affecting healing. With a background in general surgery, she understands that successful wound management starts with identifying the underlying cause and developing an appropriate treatment plan.

What is wound care?

Wound care is more than dressing a cut. It is a clinical service designed to treat wounds that are slow to heal, show signs of infection, or require specialised attention due to their location or complexity.

You may need professional wound care if:

  • A surgical wound is not healing as expected
  • There is increasing pain, redness, or discharge
  • You have a chronic wound, such as a diabetic ulcer
  • A skin injury has become infected or reopened
  • You recently had wound debridement, or may require it

The goal is to promote healing, prevent complications, and reduce the risk of infection.

What is wound debridement?

Wound debridement is the removal of dead or infected tissue from a wound. This allows healthy tissue to grow and helps the wound heal more effectively. It may be recommended if a wound becomes stagnant or if healing slows due to the build-up of non-viable tissue.

Common signs a wound may need debridement include:

  • Yellow or black tissue in the wound bed
  • Persistent fluid or discharge
  • Delayed healing despite basic care
  • Increased pain, swelling, or odour

In many cases, debridement can be performed in a clinic setting. A careful, sterile approach is used to minimise discomfort and support clean healing.

What types of wounds can be treated?

We assess and treat a wide range of wounds, including:

  • Post-surgical wounds
  • Minor burns
  • Cuts and lacerations
  • Pressure sores
  • Diabetic foot ulcers
  • Infected skin lesions
  • Wounds requiring debridement

The consultation also provides an opportunity to review your medical history, existing health conditions, medications, and any previous treatment you may have received. This helps identify factors that may be delaying healing and ensures that the most appropriate management plan is recommended.

What happens during a wound care appointment?

Every wound care appointment begins with a detailed consultation and assessment. Before treatment is provided, Dr Lakshmanan will evaluate the wound, discuss your symptoms, review your medical history, and determine whether any underlying factors may be affecting healing. The process typically includes:

  1. A visual assessment of the wound
  2. Measurement and documentation of size and depth
  3. Cleaning and dressing the area
  4. Removal of dead tissue if necessary (wound debridement)
  5. Discussion of how to care for the wound at home
  6. Planning of follow-up visits if required

If the wound shows signs of systemic infection or delayed healing beyond the scope of a clinic, you may be referred for more extensive debridement and hospitalisation, depending on the findings.

How can I care for my wound between visits?

Wound healing does not end when you leave the clinic. To support recovery, it is important to keep the dressing clean and dry, avoid friction or pressure on the area, and follow the instructions provided at your appointment.

Monitor the wound for signs of infection, such as redness, warmth, or discharge, and return for follow-up care as scheduled. If antibiotics or topical treatments are prescribed, use them exactly as directed. These simple but essential tips help reduce the risk of complications and support steady healing.
